Midtown Farmers’ Market Newsletter      November 2011 It’s getting to be that time of the year where vegetables that brave the cold nights are warmed with summer’s preserves. Just ask Tarheel Foodie. She knows. And she isn’t afraid to share her bounty of knowledge with you as you sample a freshly prepared seasonal treat. She has been an incredible asset to our market, having visited us the first Saturday of every month this season. We are extremely grateful for her willingness to work with our market, local farmers, fishermen, bee-keepers, bakers and retailers to spread awareness (and flavor!) of eating locally and seasonally. Friday Nights starting June 24th and continuing through August 26th

Location: Base of Captrust Tower, North Hills Expansion

Local bands/acoustic acts will play on stage in the pocket park at the base of the Captrust Tower from 5:30-7:30pm on Fridays in June, July, and August.  These local musicians add ambiance and a sense of community to the North Hills expansion and create a place to relax and mingle on Friday evenings.  In 2008 and 2009, attendees gathered to listen to family friendly and familiar original songs.

Who’s up for traveling the world on a passport of over 500 different bottled beers from 40 different countries, and dozens of rotating taps?

Midtown nightlife has a new addition coming that will have the entire Triangle talking.  World of Beer (WOB) is taking its first leap out of Florida, and will be opening this summer in the Fountain Park at Captrust Tower, across from Zoes Kitchen.  Watch for high definition sports action and live music on the weekends showcasing local talent, along with state and national recording artists.

For those of us who live at Park and Market Apartments, World of Beer is our next door neighbor.  As for me, I’m thinking about installing a zip line right into WOB… Splash!

March, April and May Submissions – Auction and Festival June 11th

Location: Throughout the North Hills Property

Plein Air 2011 Application

This event was a tremendous success in its first year, and grew to be a signature North Hills event in 2010.  Artists of all ages will be invited to set up around the property to paint scenes at North Hills that will be judged during a Saturday festival event.  The June festival will be an “arts festival” format featuring works from the area artists for sale and display, a silent auction, fun and relaxing live music, as well as food and beverages.  One of the great elements of this event will be the “quick paint” competition where artists will line up at easels and paint for an allotted time period with the crowd watching.  These paintings will be judged by the same panel that reviewed all of the submitted plein air artworks.

Lucy’s Book Club – “Lucy’s Book Club (LBC) is an educational outreach program to the Wake County, NC community and our online friends from the Lucy Daniels Center for Early Childhood. The Center has been recognized locally, regionally, and nationally for its innovative mental health and child development programs for children.” Lucy’s Book Club will be providing the Commons with book readings at 10am and 10:45am! Sally Reed and Sheldron Fulcher will be leading our 10am Lucy’s Book Club reading. They are both aspiring NCSU Cheerleaders who strive to lead their wolfpack family as well as their community.

CHEERS! CHEERLEADERS! – These excited cheerleaders range in age from 3 years old to 3rd grade and are ready to dance, cheer, move and grove! Don’t miss their performance on the commons at 9am!

Craig Thompson – “Craig has been playing bass in Raleigh, NC-based band, Old Habits, for the past 7 years. Originally from Charlotte, NC, he has shared the stage with artists such as Sam Bush, the Steep Canyon Rangers, and Southern Culture on the Skids. Expect a show filled with music from John Prine, Lyle Lovett, Guy Clark, and other original and traditional songs.” Craig will be playing from 10am-12pm on the commons. Visit Craig on Reverb Nation.

A Journal of Discovery through the eyes of a real-life resident of Park and Market North Hills

There is something enchanting about fountains.  The sound of the water spilling over, the play of light as the drops rise and fall, something soothing and timeless pulls us in.  

Towns built by Romans on water, like Aix-en-Provence, the city of a thousand fountains, whisper their way into the hearts of those who visit. 

Fountains speak romance.  Think Three Coins in the Fountain, the 1950s movie that immortalizes Italy’s Trevi fountain with its Frank Sinatra lyrics, and that brings us around to the sound of music. 

Not the movie, but the echoes of sheer delight that drift up to my windows from the fountain just across from Park and Market.  This beautiful little corner with flags flying and the blue umbrellas, makes the perfect place to sit for awhile and for children to run in endless circles, stopping to dip a hand in the water, laughing the entire time.  

On Friday evenings, the sound of music kicks up a notch with the amplified sounds of Emerging Artists concerts.  The long cool shadow of the Captrust Tower plays over the perfect stage that is probably meant be an outdoor restaurant one day.  A relaxing way to start the weekend, and wherever I am at home – in my living room or under those blue umbrellas – I’ve got a front row seat.
