Lung cancer kills more people than breast, prostate, and colon cancers combined – yet it is the least-funded cancer.  The North Carolina Lung Cancer Partnership (NCLCP, nclungcancerpartnership.org) is dedicated to raising public awareness of the disease and generating funding for lung cancer research.  The NCLCP is the first state Chapter of the National Lung Cancer Partnership, the only lung cancer advocacy organization founded by physicians and researchers working together with survivors and advocates to increase lung cancer awareness and research funding.

Our Free to Breathe® event series and fundraising program unites thousands of families, friends, neighbors and coworkers across the country, creating communities of hope – communities for everyone affected by lung cancer, no matter what they have experienced, to connect with each other and feel empowered to create significant change; change that means progress, change that saves lives and change that defeats lung cancer! This year’s Raleigh Free to Breathe® 5K and 1 mile Run/Walk & Rally will be held on November 5, at North Hills.

Join thousands of lung cancer survivors, family, friends and advocates to create change for lung cancer. Form your team now to positively impact the lives of those affected by this disease.

Since its inception in 2006, the Free to Breathe® series has raised over $3.6 million, with 100% of the net proceeds from each event dedicated to making a difference for everyone affected by lung cancer and directly funding programs of change through the National Lung Cancer Partnership and its Chapters. These programs include:

RESEARCH – Since 2005 the Partnership has awarded more than $2.2 million for 24 research grants. The Partnership is honored to fund such innovative lung cancer research at the beginning of a young investigator’s career, when funding availability can determine the focus of their research.  Our support has jump-started the careers of researchers who have gone on to receive continued funding for their work from the National Institute of Health, Department of Defense, and the American Cancer Society, as well as other philanthropies. Our 2010 research investment allowed us to fund 6 new grants this year, designed to improve screening, diagnosis, treatment and care of those diagnosed with lung cancer.

AWARENESS – Through the Free to Breathe® program and other initiatives, the Partnership is increasing compassion towards patients and their families, increasing hope for the newly-diagnosed, and raising the public’s interest in advocating for lung cancer research funding.

PATIENT EDUCATION – The Partnership has developed a multitude of free print and online materials to help patients and their families better understand what a diagnosis of lung cancer means and how to find help on their lung cancer journey.

The American Cancer Society will be hosting their 5th Annual, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, at North Hills this Saturday, October 1st. Come walk the 5K to help raise money for those fighting Breast Cancer.

In true North Hills style, Sparians and three other North Hills locals, Hayley’s Boutique, Nativa Boutique, and Scout & Molly’s, are teaming up with Models for Charity for a fashion show and bowling to benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.

Don’t be late – the fun begins at 8pm with the fashion show, giveaways, and continues after 10pm with DJ Ryan spinning in the Midtown Suite until 2am.

Piola is lending a hand whenever they hand you a meal. Through December 31st, they are donating money for every pizza or entree they sell, and encouraging their customers to join the cause with $5 or $10.

Camp Firefly was created by Kirk Cameron, from Growing Pains and Fireproof, to give terminally-ill children and their families an opportunity to have fun at an all-expense paid summer camp. The CAPCOMMUNITY of CAPTRUST Financial Advisors and North Hills are banding together to help. With a silent auction and donation locations at the shops, you can help, too.

Shopping isn’t the only way to get involved. All week, North Hills is collecting donations for Dress for Success of the Triangle NC Chapter. Drop off your suits, shoes, and accessories and help outfit a fellow woman in need. You can drop off items at Brothers Cleaners and Tyler House, near the Alexan Apartments.
