Calling all new, old, experienced, inexperienced, awesome photographers!! As part of Art Week at North Hills, we’re announcing the first NH Photography competition and we want YOU to enter! Below is the application with detailed information. Stay tuned for more information and events at Art Week 2012.

Photography Competition

March 30 – May 29th (new extended deadline!)

WHO

Eligibility is open to all amateur and professional photographers, except for the employees of Kane Realty
Corporation, Midtown Events, LLC, and their immediate families.

WHAT

Photographs must be shot on location or adjacent to North Hills, must include North Hills, and must be
photographed between March 19 and May 19, 2012. Any subject matter is eligible. Winner of Best in
Show will be included in a North Hills advertisement Winners of all categories will have the opportunity to
sell their entire portfolio of work at Art Day at the Midtown Farmers Market on June 9, 2012 and will also
receive recognition on North Hills social media. Cash prizes will be awarded as follows:

Best in Show – $500 cash prize
Peoples’ Choice – $100 cash prize
Spirit of North Hills – $100 cash prize
Unique Point-of-View – $100 cash prize
North Hills Nights – $100 cash prize

Manipulation of images, either film or digital, should be limited to conventional darkroom techniques or
basic sharpening and cropping. Images should contain only the subject matter as originally seen through
the viewfinder. Multiple exposures, digitally stitched photos, high dynamic range images and photos
containing any manipulated or added content will not be accepted and should not be entered. Entries
may not contain any text or images aside from that contained in the subject matter. Date stamps,
signatures, frames, and trail camera information are not permitted, regardless of whether they are added
during or after the image is photographed. Original images may be cropped to eliminate date stamps or
other text. An entrant must hold all rights to each photograph entered in this competition. Photos
previously published or pending publication, or that violate or infringe upon another person’s copyright,
are not eligible.

HOW

Email photo submissions to bkietzman@kanerealtycorp.com. Only JPEG files smaller than 6MB will be
accepted. Entrants may submit a maximum of three (3) photos. The following information must be
included in the body of the email for an attached photo to be considered.

The competition begins on Monday, March 19, 2012. Entries must be submitted via email by 9:00PM on
Saturday, May 19, 2012 to bkietzman@kanerealtycorp.com. The top 20 entries will be selected and
informed via email by Wednesday, May 23, 2012. These entries will be displayed at North Hills from
Monday, May 28 to Friday, June 8 before final award announcement on Saturday, June 9, 2012. Details
regarding voting, display, and award distribution to come.

THE FINE PRINT

By entering the 2012 North Hills Art Week Photo Competition, entrants grant Kane Realty Corporation,
Midtown Events, LLC, and all sponsors the right to publish and use submitted photographs in print or
electronic form to promote the competition and North Hills. Reproduction of entries will include
photographer credit. Entrants agree that if their submission is selected as a top twenty finalist, they grant
Kane Realty Corporation, Midtown Events, LLC, and all sponsors the right to display their photograph(s)
at venues including, but not limited to North Hills. Exhibition of entries will include photographer credit.

A judging panel will determine entry eligibility.

Entrants agree to indemnify and hold harmless Kane Realty Corporation, Midtown Events, LLC, and the
North Hills property entities of and from any and all liability, loss, cost, damage, and expense of any kind

Midtown Farmers Market
Saturdays 8am-noon, beginning April 21 in the Commons

This growers only market has become a community staple, allowing local residents to support North
Carolina Farmers every Saturday from April through November. Market patrons enjoy a fabulous
selection of produce and homemade goods, live music, and programming every weekend.

Midtown Beach Music Series
Thursdays 6-9pm, beginning April 12 in the Commons

This concert series has grown to be a favorite Thursday evening activity, drawing patrons from all across
the state to North Hills to enjoy the best beach bands around. Attendees of all ages come to
theCommons for a night of dancing, singing, and guaranteed good times.

Triangle Antique British Car Show

some of the best dancers in the business.

It’s only the beginning of May and our weather has hit astronomical heights.  As it heats up and we remain on the go- it’s more important than ever to stay hydrated and cool down during these excessive temperatures to ultimately, prevent dehydration.

Fluid is essential; it has several roles: it helps move nutrients and waste through the body,  aids in regulating blood pressure and body temperature as well as, lowers your risk for dehydration and heat stroke while serving as a protect ant to your joints and organs.

How to make sure your getting enough? Everyone is a little different; intake varies between infants, teens, adults, elderly folks and even breastfeeding mothers.  It may also depend on your gender and level of physical activity.
It’s best to keep in mind that your total fluid intake can include water as well as, milk, coffee, tea and juice.  Some fruits and vegetables also contain high amounts of water. A good goal would be 8-10, 8 ounce glasses daily (total of 64 to 80 ounces per day). Remember to drink more fluids when you are very active and out in hot weather.

Tips to incorporate more fluids:
- Carry a water bottle with you.
- Choose water when you are thirsty; avoid soft drinks when possible.
- Limit caffeinated beverages to 3 cups per day.
- Take sips during meals, snacks and throughout the day at work or while you are out.
- Soups, milk, vegetable fruit juices can also help meet needs.
- Don’t like plan water? Add fruit slices to it to “spice it up” (strawberries, lemon and lime are some of my favorites).
- Eat your water; snacking on water-filled foods like watermelon.

Signs of dehydration; some tell tale signs of dehydration may include: headache, dizziness, increased heart rate, thirst, dry lips and/or mouth, flushed skin and dark yellow, strong smelling urine.

Attendees of Bookmarked! 2011‘s Family Fun Concert will be delighted to know that we’re planning one again in 2012!

Our venue this year will be The Green at North Hills in Raleigh (with plenty of parking, restaurants, and restroom facilities!) on Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

Local children’s band Sandbox (pictured at left) will headline the concert. A five-piece family music band from the Triangle, Sandbox play what they call “rockin’, rootsy music” for children of all ages—songs, they promise, moms and dads will enjoy, too! Their live shows mix traditional songs and their own original tunes that embrace the joys of childhood, including favorite kid foods, winning and losing, hopes and dreams, bath time, and car trips.

The most fun thing about family concerts, Sandbox member Jeff Morats says, “is watching the children enjoy the music, especially their dance moves! The second most fun part is watching the parents (and grandparents) watch their kids enjoy the music. Each demographic experience the songs differently, of course, but it’s always a blast to see the kids dancing their little hearts out, while the parents and grandparents are singing along.”

The band will be joined throughout the morning by local celebrity-hero readers and other kid-friendly guests.Carolina Ballet‘s Elice McKinley (at right) will get things started with a reading at 9 a.m. Theatre in the Park’s Ira David Wood (at bottom) will make his second Family Fun Concert appearance at 10 a.m. They will be joined by Bookmarked! 2012 featured author Audrey Penn, who will read from her bestselling children’s books at 11 a.m..

Center volunteers will be on hand to sell autographed copies of Ms. Penn’s books as part of our Lucy’s Book Club Book Fair in conjunction with Quail Ridge Books. Twenty percent of sales proceeds will benefit Lucy’s Book Club and the Center’s Family Support Fund in 2012-13.

Facepainting by Paint Savvy and other free children’s activities will be offered as well.

Bio

In 2008, my husband and I moved to North Carolina with an adventurous spirit, two dogs, and a packed pickup truck.  Raleigh has quickly become a beloved part of our story, and the wonder of the Triangle and its quality of life has easily proven to be everything its cracked up to be.  Despite my love for this area, I am a rock-chalking, crimson-and-blue bleeding Jayhawk having earned my BA in Psychology with a minor in Applied Behavioral Science from the University of Kansas while concurrently taking part in the greatest college basketball experience in the history of the world.  Note: If you’re looking for a way to alienate yourself in the Triangle, repeat the previous sentence at social gatherings.

The 18 years before my life at KU were spent in Emporia, Kansas, a small-ish town 90 minutes southwest of Kansas City.  When I was 6 I wanted to be a radiologist, and that is the last time I remember really knowing what I wanted to be when I grow up.  I am so fortunate to have an unbelievable family and lifelong friends who offer support always and constructive criticism when needed.  They are my roots – an incredibly strong base that allows me to branch out, explore, learn, and find goodness in all things.

Spring Themed Family Night: Family Nights are the third Tuesday of Every Month from 5:30-7:30pm.  Celebrate the first day of Spring by making a Birdfeeder, decorating a cookie, sampling Chick-fil-A Nuggets and visiting with the Cow!

Kid Cow visits Chick-fil-A North Hills and the Commons late morning every Saturday in the month of March!
